Google Threatens Chrome Address Bar with Death

Google is exploring several "major" changes to the Chrome user interface, including a particularly compact user interface that actually hides the URL address bar when pages aren't loading.

In a recent post to the Chromium developer mailing list entitled "Major UI efforts", Google man Jeff Chang pointed to a public page describing four "window UI variants" for the Chromium OS project.

The first – known as "classic navigation" – is similar to the existing Chrome UI, but asConceivably Tech observes, another layout receiving serious consideration – "compact navigation" – would be a significant departure from the browser as we know it.

Microsoft Corp. said it plans to expand the capabilities of phones running its Windows Phone 7 software later this year, as it tries to catch up with the Apple Inc. and Google Inc. in the mobile market.

Speaking at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer unveiled the updates for the company's smartphone software, including integration with Twitter and the ability to run multiple applications simultaneously, a feature already present in many competing devices.

Google's Shows Android 3.0 - Honeycomb

More of Google's Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), the mobile operating system optimized for tablet devices, crawled out into the light of day: more developer tools, more context around its new features, more native applications, and more information about the Android Market. With each addition, the excitement builds; but this week's excitement was largely manufactured.

Carefully orchestrated announcements are ancient practice. After all, wasn't Steve Jobs' famous "one more thing" originally uttered by Cicero during the reign of Julius Caesar? But you'd have to go to Punxsutawney, PA to find an event as meaninglessly ceremonial as Google's Honeycomb rollout. Ironically, Google chose Groundhog Day for its celebration, and like the rodent's absent shadow in the middle of this dreadful winter, all we got were the same rosy promises with little relief.

Microsoft,Google Trade Barbs Over Bing Copying

San Francisco Hours after Google accused Microsoft of copying its search results, representatives from the two companies exchanged rhetorical blows over the difference between "copying" and "listening to users."

Google's Matt Cutts and Microsoft's Harry Shum smiled for the cameras at the Farsight 2011 conference today but barely disguised their mutual contempt. It was the first public appearance by each following Google's revelation that it set a trap to test whether Microsoft was using browser click data from Internet Explorer users on Google to inform search results on Bing.

Google Launched For Mobile Applications

To counter the frequent accusation of having "low-quality apps" as compared to iPhone/iOS, Google is on a hiring spree for mobile app developers. It is also seen as an effort by incoming CEO Larry Page to speed-up development and get back the start-up energy in the company.

Google's Android Market has more than 100,000 applications for sale/download . But this is nowhere in comparison to Apple's App Store hich has more than 350,000 applications available. However, the fight isn't about numbers anymore - it has graduated to comparison between the two mobile behemoths on the quality of apps. Unarguably, apps on Android Market are of lower quality as compared to those on the iOS. It is no surprise that Google is not happy with the market, the apps in it and moreso, the sales generated through it. Most of the apps are developed by third-party app developers and are available for free.

Harvard Researcher Rejects Google's 'Personal Attack'

A researcher who has accused Google of bias says the internet giant is now waging a campaign to discredit him.
Ben Edelman, an associate professor at Harvard Business School, published a study this week claiming Google boosts its own products in search results. The Californian company responded by suggesting he was actually working on behalf of its rival, Microsoft.

But Mr Edelman told the BBC that Google was launching "personal attacks" to distract people from its own behaviour. "I don't mind personal attacks, to be honest, because I think it shows they can't argue against the research," said the associate professor.

Google looks to its next decade

Google, which prides itself on helping people navigate the Internet, is facing a tangled Web as it weaves its own future. While more profitable than ever -- with nearly $30 billion in revenue last year -- Google is under pressure from new rivals such as Facebook and Twitter for the attention of Web surfers, advertising dollars and engineering talent.

In naming co-founder Larry Page, 37, to be chief executive, analysts said Google is seeking to return to its startup roots and ensure its place amid a constantly evolving Internet landscape. Outgoing CEO Eric Schmidt, 55, was brought in to run Google in 2001, when it was battling other, now defunct search engines, while Page and fellow co-founder Sergey Brin were just a few years removed from Stanford University.

Google Inc is expected to report a 22 percent jump in fourth-quarter revenue thanks to a busy holiday season, though it will face questions about long-term growth when it unveils results on Thursday. Shares of the world's No.1 Internet search engine underperformed the market in 2010 but have gained roughly 6 percent in the past three weeks as investors anticipate that Google will benefit from healthy online advertising spending.
