Morgan And Zytek Team Up To Build High Performance EV

The Morgan Aero SuperSports is a pretty impressive automobile, even in its standard form. It has a lightweight aluminum body, a hardwood and leather cockpit and a top speed of 170 mph (273 km/h). It also has a 4.8 liter BMW V8 engine, although in a project currently being undertaken by the British automaker and Zytek Automotive, that power plant will be replaced with a 70kW electric motor. The result will be known as the Electric Morgan +E.

Although only two of them will be made, the company says that if the experience proves favorable, "further developments" could result. The 70kW (94 bhp) 300Nm motor will be derived from a model already made by Zytek, that is currently being supplied to some American EV manufacturers. It will be mounted in the transmission tunnel, where it will require connections for cooling water, high voltage electrics and low voltage electrics.

Need 16GB Of RAM For Your New MacBook Pro

Anyone in the market for one of Apple's new Thunderbolt-equipped 2011 MacBook Pros would be forgiven for thinking the machines only support up to 8GB (2 x 4GB) of RAM since that's what's listed on the tech specs and is the maximum build-to-order option available through Apple.

However online store OWC says the new 2011 MacBook Pro models can actually support up to 16GB (2 x 8GB) and is selling the 8GB sticks you'll need to make it happen. The only catch is the price, which is more than the asking price for either of the two 2011 13-inch MacBook Pro models currently available.

Laptops Play Catch Up To The iPad, Xoom

Market researcher Gartner released a research note Thursday claiming that laptops are not meeting the demands of the social-networking era. So, will mobile PCs become more like the Xoom and the iPad, which are, in turn, larger versions of the smartphone? In a word, yes.

This theory or fact, depending on how you look at it--can also be restated as the post-PC era, which is the Apple marketing-spin corollary to the Gartner argument.

But let's stick to Gartner's analysis about the unsuitability of laptops in the social-networking era. Here are the most significant points in the note about the average mainstream laptop:

Apple's new MacBook Pro line-up might be grabbing all the headlines with its new Thunderbolt port, but the claimed battery life pales into insignificance when compared to that offered by HP. When running on the company's new Ultra-Capacity Notebook battery, the HP EliteBook 8460p is said to be capable of running for up to 32 hours between charges. It's one of a number of business notebook releases announced by HP, so let's take a closer look...

The HP EliteBook 8460p is available in 3-, 6- or 9-cell battery options, but is also compatible with new HP Extended Life Notebook Battery and HP Ultra-Capacity Notebook Battery. It's with the latter installed that HP claims an industry-leading battery life of a quite extraordinary 32 hours.

Why Thunderbolt is So Important For The MacBook Pro

I've had plenty to say about Apple's bizarre, pro user-hostile MacBook Pro I/O roadmap over the years (witness the shock removal of FireWire 400 in late 2008 and the removal of ExpressCard from the 15" in 2009) so it's incredibly refreshing to write about the inclusion of Thunderbolt, a decidedly "Pro" I/O interface with seemingly no downside, in the latest refresh.

iPad

Acknowledging that the iPad-related rumors come from trustworthy people but are nonetheless "hard to swallow," iLounge is using informed speculation to suggest that any iPad released in the short term may not represent Apple's initial ambitions for its first major refresh of the tablet.

Everything We've learned has come down to this

We learned a lot from iPad. The new MacBook Air is proof. It’s designed around all-flash storage for better responsiveness and reliability. It features a trackpad with full Multi-Touch support. And though it’s incredibly thin and light, its large battery gives you portable power that lasts for hours.

Advanced Technology from iPad. Taken to the Air.

A truly mobile device needs to be light, thin, and strong enough to take with you wherever you go. It also needs to perform quickly, spring to life instantly, and have enough battery power to keep up with you. It should have no spinning hard drive, no optical drive, and no unnecessary parts. All of that is true of iPad. And now, it’s true of Apple’s most mobile notebook ever: MacBook Air.

Apple's MacBook Pro line is due for a refresh with all the signs on the magic eight ball that is the Internet pointing to Thursday February 24 as launch day for updated MacBook Pros with Intel's latest Sandy Bridge processors. As usual, Apple has been playing its cards close to its corporate chest and hasn't confirmed (or denied) that new MacBook Pros are on the immediate horizon, but a couple of listings of unexplained MacBook Pro part numbers by retailers online may just have let the cat out of the bag before Apple has had a chance to announce the new models.

Macrumors is reporting that Italian site ISpazio had received an email from an Apple employee alerting them to the arrival of five new MacBook Pro products this week. The veracity of the email is strengthened by a photo on 9to5Mac showing similar model numbers that was apparently taken in a Best Buy warehouse.

If you’re the type of guy (or gal) who gives presentations a lot and relies on those old wonky “air mouse” peripherals in order to control your PC from afar, it’s time to get with the times and toss that crummy old thing—upgrade to The Loop!

Basically this snazzy looking little device is an ergonomically designed handle which encompasses a standard air mouse. The cool part is that it it’s designed to be easier to hold (prevents cramping and such) in addition to easier to use. It give presenters an unprecedented level of control over their cursors and therefore there data.

Leading global semiconductor firm AMD today said it hoped to penetrate deeper into the Indian market with launch of AMD Fusion platform, aimed at enabling developers create futuristic, visually rich applications with no-compromise performance even on small form factor devices.

The new 'Fusion' processors incorporate a graphics card (GPU) and microprocessor (CPU) on a single chip, allowing computer-makers develop new form factors for devices.

Announcing launch of the AMD Fusion Family of Accelerated Processor Units (APUs), Ravi Swaminathan, MD and Regional Vice President, Sales and Marketing, AMD India, said this would usher in the "third era of computing" and was one of the "biggest shift in PC technology" since the X86 processors were first invented.

"We feel AMD is today under penetrated in India", he said adding that the company expected to enhance its current market share of around 15 per cent through the launch of the Fusion family. He, however, refuse to quantify the target share.
The AMD Fusion APU which combines the multi-core CPU (x86) technology with powerful DirectX 11-capabilities and parallel processing engine, allows to build the small-form factor, long-battery-life PCs consumers crave, while enabling the powerful, next-generation visual experiences that help create a competitive advantage in a hyper-competitive market.

Samsung Launch 9 Series Laptop for MacBook Air

In addition to the company's Slider PC7 computer, Samsung's high-end Series 9 laptop was one of the CES 2011 standouts that we wanted to go back and take a look at. Many have billed it as a Macbook Air killer, and though we wouldn't go quite that far, the comparison is certainly a valid one. The Series 9 sports a sleek design that will likely turn just as many heads as the afore-mentioned Cupertino competitor.

This ultra-thin laptop measures in at 0.64 inches at its thickest point and the tapered design, while reminiscent of the Air, has an ergonomic curve at the back which Samsung says makes it easier to hold and carry. Weighing a mere 2.89 pounds (1.31 kg), Samsung has ensured that the Series 9 is quite literally lighter than (Apple's) Air. The 13-inch Macbook Air weighs 2.9 pounds in comparison.

Tiny Swiftpoint Mouse Designed for Laptops

Laptop users who work on the move usually find themselves having to use the trackpad more than they'd like. It's useful in tight spaces but it's not half as comfortable or useful as a real mouse. The Swiftmouse is said to provide all of the functionality and ease of use associated with a standard mouse, combined with the comfort of a stylus or pen, in a format that lends itself to being used in situations where space is limited. The wireless micro-mouse also benefits from magnetic docking and charging and some rapid scroll wizardry.

The Swiftmouse is gripped as you would a pen or a stylus, with the thumb resting on the red area to the left and the forefinger resting atop, and slightly to the front of, the mouse. The middle finger rests to the right of the mouse. The SmartTouch sensor de-activates the onscreen cursor if it detects that the user's middle finger is not touching the device, so the mouse can be moved out of the way without affecting the cursor position.
