AMD Fusion Platform
Leading global semiconductor firm AMD today said it hoped to penetrate deeper into the Indian market with launch of AMD Fusion platform, aimed at enabling developers create futuristic, visually rich applications with no-compromise performance even on small form factor devices.
The new 'Fusion' processors incorporate a graphics card (GPU) and microprocessor (CPU) on a single chip, allowing computer-makers develop new form factors for devices.
Announcing launch of the AMD Fusion Family of Accelerated Processor Units (APUs), Ravi Swaminathan, MD and Regional Vice President, Sales and Marketing, AMD India, said this would usher in the "third era of computing" and was one of the "biggest shift in PC technology" since the X86 processors were first invented.
"We feel AMD is today under penetrated in India", he said adding that the company expected to enhance its current market share of around 15 per cent through the launch of the Fusion family. He, however, refuse to quantify the target share.
The AMD Fusion APU which combines the multi-core CPU (x86) technology with powerful DirectX 11-capabilities and parallel processing engine, allows to build the small-form factor, long-battery-life PCs consumers crave, while enabling the powerful, next-generation visual experiences that help create a competitive advantage in a hyper-competitive market.
APU also includes a dedicated high-definition video accelerated block and a high speed bus that speeds data across differing types of processor cores within the same design. A 90 member team from AMD's R and D in Hyderabad played a significant role in the design and development of the microprocessors, Fusion system on chips, graphics and media solution of the chip, the company said.
Over 11 AMD Fusion-based systems will be launched in India in the first half of 2011 by leading manufacturers, including Sony, HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, MSI and Toshiba, who will deliver AMD Fusion-based systems at very compelling value and mainstream price points.
"AMD Fusion will eliminate the need for consumers to choose between power and performance, enabling exciting experiences at price points that offer tremendous value. This will also allow our partners to offer exciting new form factors on a robust computing platform", he said.
"It marks a monumental shift in computing performance experience and possibilities because of the powerful combination of CPUs and discrete-level GPUs", he said. "The concept of synergizing CPU and GPU has been intriguing. APU are designed to provide significant advantages in power and design simplicity over competing multi-chip solutions", Manju Hedge, Corporte Vice President, Fusion Experience Programme said.
"Through Fusion, AMD is targeting the "sweet spot" for accelerated high definition experiences across notebooks, desktops and high definition notebooks", he said. "With the APU technology in our stable, we will define the industry standard in personal computing", he added.

The APU would come in two versions based on performance and low power draw: The E-series, an 18 watt TDP APU codenamed Zacate is for ultra-thin, mainstream and value notebooks as well as desktops and all-in-ones.
The C series is a nine-watt APU formerly codenamed Ontario for netbooks and small form factor desktops and devices. AMD's global turnover is over $ 7 Billion.
