Egyptian Couple Names Daughter After Facebook
Just like in Iran, Twitter may have played a major role in the successful Egyptian civil unrest against President Hosni Mubarak, but Facebook received the most coverage after the Mubarak was overthrown and Egypt limped back to normalcy.
Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram reports that Jamal Ibrahim, in his twenties, has named his daughter "Facebook" Jamal Ibrahim after the social networking website. An English translation of the newspaper article reads, "The girl's family, friends, and neighbors in the Ibrahimya region gathered around the new born to express their continuing support for the revolution that started on Facebook."
The article adds, "Facebook" received many gifts from the youth who were overjoyed by her arrival and the new name - a name that shocked the entire world." Both Twitter and Facebook mobilised and coordinated the civil unrest with the means of tweets and Facebook pages, a whopping 14,000 of which, in addition to 32,000 groups for the cause, spawned in approximately last two weeks of January.
Just like everyone and their uncle are on Facebook, the Egyptians are no exception with around five million Egyptians owning Facebook accounts. No news of a Twitter baby yet, which would give Facebook Jamal Ibrahim some company against the bullies, which is quite inevitable.
