Premji dwells on social issues
Azim Premji chose to focus on social issues than on technology in his speech at the Nasscom Leadership Summit.
The Wipro chief dwelt on the need for food security, better water management, employment, empowerment of girl children, bridging the divide between the rich and poor and the use of technology to make governments more transparent. "Food and water management issues are not temporary scenarios. We should not under estimate them. Also, the gap between the rich and poor has been on the rise,'' said Premji.
He said that areas like water management, and conservation of greenery and natural resources should be regulated by independent statutory bodies that are beyond the power of the Prime Minister and governments. "They should operate on the lines of say, Sebi for stock markets, TRAI for telecom and RBI for banks. "Then there will be permanency of policies, and there won't be room for the whims and fancies of any adverse elements,'' he said.
Premji, who was speaking at a session on `New Realities of the Globalized world: the challenges and opportunities in the next decade', said the last 2.5 years have been really different and tough. "It has been a catharsis for most companies and most CEOs. Linear organizations that are focused on productivity and cash flows could survive the onslaught," he said.
China, he said, had become aggressive, and even CEOs of large global corporations were feeling the threat. To counter this, large global players are hugely expanding in emerging markets, which he said would be advantageous for India.
